URGENT PRESS RELEASE : OCTOBER 16, 2023. AKURE – ONDO STATE

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU, (GCFR), THE FIRST LADY OF NIGERIA, SENATOR OLUREMI TINUBU AND THE NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE (NWC) OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) ON THE NEED TO CONCEDE THE PARTY’S TICKET TO WOMEN IN THE FORTHCOMING BY- ELECTION IN AKOKO NORTH,  EAST/AKOKO, NORTH WEST FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY.

The women’s wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, wishes to formally congratulate the leadership of our party, Africa’s largest and sturdiest political association, APC, on its landslide victory at the last general election.

We note, with pleasure, the endearing manner President Tinubu has since listened to and addressed the interests of citizens to the extent that his cabinet has been manifestly fair to all sections; this has given the administration out as one that truly cares about the various categories of the citizens.

To this extent, the women of the Ondo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would like to draw the attention of the national leadership of our great party to the perpetual injustice against the female population of the party in Ondo State, concerning elective positions, as follows:

  • That representation at the national assembly has virtually become the exclusive preserve of the menfolk, as only one woman has represented Ondo State at the National Assembly since the nation’s return to democratic governance in 1999;
  • The percentage of female representation from Ondo State in either the Senate or House of Representatives has been nearly nonexistent.
  • The female population in the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been visibly active and played critical roles in party politics and electioneering transactions that culminated in the sweeping success the party recorded during the last parliamentary elections in the state.
  • Despite the steady, significant, and strategic interventions of the women in favor of the party in Ondo State, nothing has been done to recognize our place concerning a fair share of representation at the national assembly; hence women’s interest and yearning have since been pushed to the background.
  • The seemingly permanent lack of fairness to women in Ondo State, apart from being morally wrong, is clearly against the spirit and letters of the constitution of the All Progressives Congress to the effect that; it is also opposed to the 35% women inclusiveness as avowed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
  • That out of the present twelve (12) Ondo State representatives at the national assembly- both Senate and House of Representatives, there is no woman among them; and that the vacancy occasioned by the appointment of the former occupier of the seat as Minister and his subsequent resignation from the national assembly provides another opportunity for women to demand that one of us should be allowed to bear the party’s flag as a candidate in the forthcoming by-election for Akoko North East/Akoko Northwest Federal Constituency.
  • This situation of sore injustice is very demoralizing for the womenfolk of the Ondo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress as it portrays the women as undeserving; whereas, we have in our fold competent women with requisite intellectual wherewithal to represent us at the National Assembly.
  • That e request that the party’s ticket for the forthcoming bye-election in Akoko North-East/Akoko Northwest Federal Constituency is conceded to the womenfolk as an immediate relief for its cumulative political disadvantage and deprivations.
  • That we strongly appeal to the leadership of the APC at the national and state levels to give Ondo State omen a chance at the National Assembly by acceding to our request.

Thank you.
